Patient Education

Ann Mullun, RN, MSN, AE-C, instructing an adult patient education class

The goal of educating the patient and family at National Jewish Health is to improve patient health outcomes by promoting recovery, speeding return to function, promoting healthy behavior and appropriately involving the patient and family in their care and care decisions. The major components of the Patient Education Program are group and individual education for the patient and family. The use of written materials, the National Jewish Health website and DVD/videos supplement education.

Education Methods

Group Education: There are a number of weekly group classes. Patients and family members are encouraged to attend, and the classes are free for them. Nurses, physical therapists, recreational therapists, pharmacists and nutritionists teach the classes. Discussion is encouraged.

Individual Patient Education: Patients meet one-on-one with a health care provider to individualize patient education for the patient and family based on the assessed needs. The individual teaching supports the plan of care determined by the health care provider and patient. Skills such as inhaled medication technique and peak flow technique often include a return demonstration by the patient. Problem solving is incorporated into the teaching.

Print Materials: There are a number of written materials to support patient education at National Jewish Health. They include Understanding Booklets, the Asthma Wizard Activity Book, Med Facts, Test Facts, Medication handouts and the Asthma Wizard Activity Book for children. Some of these materials are also available in Spanish. Learn more about print and multimedia materials.
