Psychiatric Medications
The psychiatrists in the Division of Psychosocial Medicine are experts in the use of psychiatric medications for treating patients with chronic medical illness. Just as the careful and thoughtful use of inhaled medication can be very useful to reduce breathing symptoms in patients with asthma or COPD, equally careful and thoughtful use of anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medications can be of great benefit to patients with chronic medical illnesses who also have certain psychiatric problems like depression or panic anxiety.
We do our best to make sure that our patients get all the information they need to understand the pros and cons of using psychiatric medications, including a very careful review of their overall health as well as any other medications that they may be taking.
The Division of Psychosocial Medicine is a multidisciplinary team that contains many other types of behavioral and mental health clinicians, so our patients also benefit from a thorough discussion of the alternative treatments available to them instead of or in addition to the use of psychiatric medications.
